How to Download Your Server World Using FileZilla

(with reference to the official FileZilla + Minecraft tutorial video above)

Downloading your Minecraft server world is easy when you connect to your server files through SFTP or FTP using FileZilla. This guide — paired with the referenced video — will help you get a full copy of your world folder on your computer.

What you need

  • FileZilla installed on your computer.
  • Your server’s SFTP/FTP credentials, found under “Overview”“FTP File Access” in your server control panel.

Step 1 — Install FileZilla

If you don’t have FileZilla yet:

  1. Download the FileZilla Client from its official site.
  2. Install it.
  3. Launch FileZilla.

The video starts by showing how to install and open FileZilla, so you can follow along visually. YouTube

Step 2 — Get Your FTP/SFTP Credentials

Log into your server’s hosting panel and navigate to:

  • Overview → you should see the host address or server IP
  • FTP File Access → here you’ll find or generate your FTP/SFTP username and password

Save the following: Host, Port (usually 21 for FTP or 22 for SFTP), Username, Password.

The video shows exactly how and where to paste these credentials into FileZilla. YouTube

Step 3 — Connect via FileZilla

  1. In FileZilla’s “Quickconnect” bar, enter:
    • Host (from your panel)
    • Username
    • Password
    • Port (21 or 22)
  1. Click Quickconnect to connect.

If everything is correct, you’ll see your server’s file structure on the right side of FileZilla — confirmed in the video. YouTube

Step 4 — Navigate to your world folder

On the server side (right panel), locate your Minecraft world folder. Common names:

  • world
  • world_nether
  • world_the_end
  • Or a custom name if you renamed it

Inside should be files like level.dat, folders like region/, playerdata/, etc. This shows you’re in the correct folder. The video demonstrates a similar browsing process. YouTube

Step 5 — Download the world to your computer

  1. Right-click the world folder.
  2. Select Download.
  3. FileZilla will begin copying the entire folder (and subfolders) to your local computer (left panel).

Make sure you have enough disk space — large worlds can take time. The video shows this transfer in action. YouTube

Step 6 — Locate the downloaded world on your computer

FileZilla saves files to the folder currently open on your left panel. To control where you save:

  • Before downloading, navigate the left panel to your desired folder (e.g., a dedicated “Minecraft Backups” folder).

Once downloaded, you have a fully functional copy of your world — ready for backup, editing, or reuse.
